President Joe Biden has expressed confidence that new House Speaker Mike Johnson will not attempt to overturn the results of the next presidential election. He cited the failure of previous attempts to reverse the outcome of the 2020 election as a reason for his lack of concern.
Upholding the Outcome: Experiences from the Last Election
Biden dismissed worries about a potential reversal of the 2024 contest, in which he is running against former President Donald Trump, who is leading the Republican field for the nomination. He compared the situation to his own experience, stating, "Just like I was not worried that the last guy would be able to overturn the election. They had about 60 lawsuits, they went all the way to the Supreme Court, and every time they lost." Clearly, President Biden is confident in upholding the democratic principles outlined in the Constitution.
Mike Johnson's Role in Previous Legal Efforts
Mike Johnson, a Louisiana congressman with expertise in constitutional issues, played a significant role in rallying Republicans behind Trump's legal efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. However, the Supreme Court ultimately rejected a number of cases related to the election, including disputes from Pennsylvania. These lawsuits were filed by Trump and his allies in five states that Biden had won: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
