The U.K. stock market was slightly bearish on Tuesday, with the FTSE 100 Index closing down 0.03% at 7,485.73.
Declining Stocks
Among the constituents of the FTSE 100, abrdn PLC, an investment advisor company, witnessed the sharpest decline, with shares plummeting by 3.18%. Furthermore, building materials/products firm CRH PLC and diversified reits company British Land Co. PLC also experienced a decrease of 2.92% and 2.90%, respectively.
Admiral Group PLC, a non-life insurance company, and Compass Group PLC, specializing in the restaurant industry, were also among the top five decliners. Their stocks dropped by 2.89% and 2.59%, respectively.
Surging Stocks
Conversely, Standard Chartered PLC, a prominent international banking institution, witnessed the biggest increase among the FTSE 100 constituents, with shares jumping by an impressive 4.34% on Tuesday. Additionally, air freight firm International Distribution Services PLC and life insurance company Prudential PLC experienced gains of 2.99% and 2.46%, respectively.
Antofagasta PLC, a company engaged in non-ferrous metals, and Entain PLC, operating in the gambling industries sector, also observed a surge in their stock values. Both companies reported an increase of 2.40%.
Currency and Commodity Market Updates
The pound weakened against the dollar by 0.41%, with the GBP/USD pair trading at $1.2659. Conversely, the pound strengthened against the euro by 0.09%, reaching €1.1689.
Brent crude oil experienced a slight decline of 0.5%, settling at $79.68 per barrel. Meanwhile, the yield on the 10-year gilt increased by 7.760 basis points to 3.988%.
